What Are the Duties of an Entry-Level Pilot?
Your primary responsibility as an Entry-Level Pilot is to support the Captain and make sure every flight is a safe and wonderful experience. Your day to day duties will include:
Before the Flight:
- Monitor weather and flight plans.
- Check the airplane (fuel, engines, controls, and safety equipment).
- Collaborate with air traffic control and ground crew.
- Assist passengers with boarding safely (if flying for an airline).
During the Flight:
- Work with Captain do pilot the plane safely.
- Watch the instruments, the navigation, and also the level of fuel.
- Use the air traffic control.
- Deal with emergencies as they come up (rare, but be ready).
After the Flight:
- Finish flight reports and log entries.
- Discussing with the Captain and crew.
- Get ready for the next flight.
Who Can Apply? (Requirements)
Here’s the three basic requirements you need to have to become an Entry-Level Pilot in Canada:
Education & Licenses:
- CPL (Commercial Pilot License) -Must be Canadian.
- Class 1 Medical Certificate – You are medically certified.
- Radio Operator Certificate (ROC-A) – to communicate.
- Has Active Flight Training – From an FAA certified flight school.
Flight Experience:
- 150-250+ hours of flight time (some positions may require more).
- Multi-Engine Rating (preferred but not always required).
- IFR (Instrument Rating) – Enhances the ability for bad weather flying.
Skills & Personality:
- Good communication You will communicate with crew, travelers and air traffic control.
- Problem-solving — The ability to think on one’s feet in emergencies.
- Teamwork: Pilots liaise closely with co-pilots and the people who are in charge of crewing the plane.
- Cool under pressure – The friendly skies can be anything but amicable, so you’ve got to stay cool.
How Can Entry Level Pilots Work?
New pilots in Canada rather find work in areas of flying such as:
Regional Airlines: Small commercial passenger planes (ex: Porter, Air Canada Express).
Charter & Tour Companies – Carrying tourists or business people on a day trip.
Cargo & Courier – Aerial package and freight transportation service (e.g., Purolator, Cargojet).
Bushflying – Serving northern communities in Canada.
Flight Instructing – Training new students to fly planes.
Many pilots start small, flying little planes (such as the Cessna Caravan or Beechcraft King Air) and upgrade to larger jets (like the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320) as they gain experience.
