Air traffic controllers are responsible for the safe and efficient movement of aircraft in controlled airspace and on the ground at airports. They give commands to pilots, track air traffic, and manage aircraft so they do not collide and be delayed. Communicating efficiently around the best decisions they have to make under stressful conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Radar, computer, and visual references are used to monitor and direct the movement of aircraft in assigned airspace.
- This is how you will have to give the instructions to pilots when taking off, landing, and flying.
- Establish or avoid aircraft arrivals and departures to ensure safety between planes.
- They effective with pilots, ground crews, and other air traffic controllers.
- Update your training to include data until October 2023.
- Keep in contact with other air traffic control centers to allow transient airspace usage.
- Maintaining detailed records of the path, weather conditions, and communication logs.
- You have no way of ever knowing when a new regulation might come into effect.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree in aviation-related field preferred)
- Graduates from an accredited air traffic control training program.
- Certification from appropriate aviation regulatory body (i.e. NAV CANADA in Canada or FAA in the U.S.)
- Excellent analytical and decision-making abilities.
- Strong verbal communication & active listening.
- Able to work under pressure and to react fast.
- Excellent spatial awareness and multitasking abilities.
- Expertise in radar, radio communication, and similar air traffic control technology.
